How to Choose a Branding Agency in Indonesia: A Checklist for Global Teams
The risk of hiring a studio abroad is mostly about process, and process can be checked before you sign. Eight things to look for.
Hiring a branding studio in another country is a leap of faith. You are trusting a team you may never meet in person with the most visible part of your business. The good news is that the risk is mostly about process, and process can be checked before you sign.
This checklist is written for international teams choosing a branding agency in Indonesia. It works just as well for Indonesian companies comparing studios in Jakarta, Bandung or Surabaya.
1. Look for thinking, not only finished visuals
A beautiful portfolio shows taste. It does not show how a studio reached the result. Ask to see the reasoning behind two or three projects: what problem the client had, what the studio proposed, and why the final identity looks the way it does. If the explanation starts and ends with the logo, the studio may be strong at styling and weaker at strategy.
On every case study we publish, we split the story into Context, Concept and Content so you can follow the decisions, not just the outcome. Our project for Recourt, a padel replay kiosk, is a short example.
2. Check the range of touchpoints they have delivered
An identity is only as good as its hardest application. Ask whether the studio has delivered work in the places your brand will live:
- Physical spaces such as signage, wayfinding and interiors
- Packaging and retail
- Uniforms, merchandise and printed matter
- Digital products, social media and motion
A studio that has designed hotel wayfinding, like our work for Hemora, has already solved problems of scale, materials and legibility that a screen-only studio may meet for the first time on your project.
3. Meet the person who will lead your project
Sales and delivery are often different people. Ask to speak with the designer or strategist who will run your project, and check that you can communicate comfortably with them in your working language. This single conversation tells you more about the next few months than any credentials deck.
4. Agree on how and when you will review work
Indonesia’s western time zone (WIB, UTC+7) covers Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya. It overlaps well with Singapore, Australia and most of Asia, and partially with Europe. Agree early on:
- A fixed weekly review slot that works for both sides
- Which decisions can be made asynchronously, and in which tool
- Who on your side has final approval, so feedback does not arrive from five directions
5. Put ownership and deliverables in writing
Your contract or proposal should state clearly:
- That you own the final identity and receive all source files
- The formats you will receive (vector logos, colour specifications for print and screen, templates)
- Whether brand guidelines are included, and in which language
- How many revision rounds are included at each stage
6. Ask how they handle language and culture
If your brand will speak to Indonesian audiences, ask how the studio checks names, taglines and imagery for meaning in Bahasa Indonesia and regional languages, and for religious and cultural sensitivity. A good studio will raise these questions before you do.
7. Understand the price, line by line
Quotes for branding in Indonesia vary widely, from simple logo packages to full rebrands with rollout. Compare what each proposal includes rather than the total. We wrote a separate guide on how much branding costs in Indonesia with public market ranges and the questions to ask.
8. Start with a small, well-defined phase
If you are unsure, begin with a research and strategy phase before committing to the full identity. It lets both teams test how they work together, and it produces something useful even if you go no further.
A quick checklist
- Can they explain the thinking behind their work?
- Have they delivered your hardest touchpoints before?
- Have you met your project lead?
- Is the review rhythm agreed?
- Are ownership, files and revisions in writing?
- Do they check language and culture for your markets?
