Hotel Branding in Indonesia: Designing a Stay From Arrival to Amenities

A hotel brand lives in every step of a stay. How we approach hospitality identities, from wayfinding to the bottle of soap.

Guest walking through a warm hotel lobby

A hotel brand is not a logo on a website. It is the sign at the end of the road, the van that picks you up, the key card in your hand, the floor directory by the lift and the bottle of soap in the shower. Guests experience the brand with every step of their stay, which makes hospitality one of the most demanding briefs in branding.

Here is how we approach hotel branding in Indonesia, from positioning to the smallest amenity.

Start with the stay you want guests to remember

Before any design, define the experience in a few words. Restful and close to nature? Refined and attentive? Social and lively? This becomes the filter for every decision that follows. As hospitality branding guides point out, the brand promise should follow from a clear positioning and then be delivered in the guest experience (The Brand Berries).

Balance local character and international expectations

Indonesian hotels serve domestic travellers and international guests at the same time. The identity has to feel rooted in its place while remaining clear to someone who does not speak Bahasa Indonesia. Local materials, landscapes and craft can carry the character; typography, pictograms and wayfinding carry the clarity.

Think in touchpoints, in the order guests meet them

We map the guest journey and design for each moment:

  • Arrival: facade signage, entrance, shuttle and vehicle livery
  • Check-in: reception, key cards, welcome materials
  • Finding the way: floor directories, room numbers, pictograms
  • The room: amenities, stationery, in-room screens, slippers
  • Beyond the room: restaurant, events, merchandise, social media

Wayfinding is branding

Wayfinding is where a hotel identity proves itself. Signs must be legible from a distance, in low light and in two languages, while still feeling like part of the brand. For Hemora, a three-star hotel by Mora Group, the wayfinding sits on a forest path: a calm, clean sign that guides guests to rooms, meeting rooms, the pool and the ballroom without breaking the natural setting. The same forest green and circular emblem then carry through to floor signage, key cards and amenities.

Premium is in the details

For upscale properties, quality has to be felt at every scale. Morazen, a four to five-star hotel by the same group, uses a modern wordmark with a distinctive angled A, paired with warm gold and earthy tones. The identity has to look as good lit up on a tower at night as it does embossed on a business card or displayed on an in-room screen.

Sister brands need their own personality

Hotel groups often run several brands at different levels. Each needs its own character, while the group stays recognizable to partners and investors. Hemora and Morazen share an owner but speak to different guests, so they look and feel different. We cover this in more depth in our article on brand architecture for holding groups.

Build a system the team can use

Hotels produce new materials every week: event signage, menus, promotions, seasonal offers. Without templates and clear guidelines, the identity erodes quickly. A good hospitality identity includes ready-to-use templates and simple rules that staff can follow without calling a designer.

A hotel branding checklist

  • A clear sentence describing the stay
  • An identity that balances local character and international clarity
  • Every touchpoint mapped along the guest journey
  • Bilingual, legible wayfinding and pictograms
  • Amenities and stationery designed as part of the system
  • Templates and guidelines for the operations team
